Children’s Choice Book Awards

Apr 6th

Ever think your vote didn’t matter? Well it does. By the end of next month, it will certainly matter to many authors and illustrators of your favorite books! Voting has begun for the 2012 Children’s Choice Book Awards - an online voting poll taking place now through May 7th. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s kinda like the Oscars or Grammys, or even Teen Choice Awards…but for books. Yes, it doesn’t get all the fanfare or TV time as the others. However, it may affect what your favorite author will write next, or what books may go on store shelves (on downloaded) in the future. After all, what you read and buy is what others will make more of. The Children’s Choice Book Awards is just one part of Children’s Book Week (CBW), recognized nationwide since 1919!

Children’s Choice Book Award categories include: Book of the Year, Author of the Year, and Illustrator of the Year. So get voting! Go to Book Week Online and cast your vote under your grade level. Maybe your favorites are already on the ballot.

The class website has a new category of JUST MATH LINKS on the righthand sidebar. We hope you will use this resource as CST testing approaches. My new favorite addition is Mathtrain.tv. Students from Lincoln Middle School, in Santa Monica, CA create their own tutorials for different math skills. Maybe hearing a peer’s directions will make more sense? Check it out!

Rosebank Soccer Playoffs! – Our Rosebank Soccer team is in the soccer playoffs for our school district!! Come watch and cheer them on this Friday, March 23th at 4:30 pm, the Olympic Training Center. Our very own Alex L. and Bianca will be playing for our team. We hope they do well. Go Panthers!!

Perfect Attendance & Lunch with the Principal- Congratulations to all those students for maintaining perfect attendance for the month of February: Isamar, Caithlyn, Bianca, Alex L., Salma, Benji, Raul, Karla, Jocelyn, & Monique. Also, congratulations to Jocelyn for earning Lunch with the Principal. Because she takes an active role in her studies, and for being a role model on Safety Patrol, she exhibited February’s character trait of “service & leadership.”

AR: Congratulations to those students who met their AR goal for February. It was one of the largest groups this year: Lynet, Isamar, Ashley, Michael, Caithlyn, Alyssa, Sarah, Bianca, Benji, Raul, Venicia, Elijah, Ariah, Abraham, Maritza, Jocelyn, Jazmin, Monique & Ariana. They were rewarded with extra recess and snacks on a “Fun Friday” earlier in the month.

Report Cards & Parent Conferences  – Thank you to those parents who were able to attend parent conferences this week. We appreciate the time you are taking to invest in your child’s education. We hope the information received will help prepare students for next year. Parents who did not attend conferences should receive their child’s report card on Friday, March 23th. Parents may keep the report card and all the assessment data that will accompany it.

Spring Break – No School March 26 – April 6. School will resume Monday, April 9th.

IXL & A.R -

• IXL - students who work towards improving the difficult strands in IXL will receive a homework pass. There needs to be significant effort towards mastering lows skills – fixing ONE math strand won’t cut it!

• A.R. – Students need to complete at least one (1) book report upon returning to school from Spring Break. April goals will remain the same number as March goals. These can be found when logging into AR under “Points and Goals”

6th Grade Camp – Camp payments, camp store money (optional), and medical health forms are all due Friday March 23th.  Camp is April 16-20th.   Students who cannot go to camp, must stay behind to attend school. The week is NOT a “free” week off! Mrs. Dare, Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Rios will rotate during the week to supervise students at Rosebank.

End-of-the-Year Activities – After Spring Break and 6th Grade Camp, there are approximately six weeks left of the school year! Students will be permitted to attend any end-of-the-year activities ONLY based upon the following requirements: (1) Research Reports are turned in on time, (2) AR goals are met, (3) less than five discipline slips for the new quarter, (4) less than 10 missing assignments. Work may not be made up after their assigned date unless the student was absent. If students do not meet one or more or more of these requirements, they may not be invited to either the Soak City field trip or a second 6th grade field trip (to be determined) in May. For the complete notice that went home on Teacherease, download it here.

**Please follow other important emails on Teacherease, school fliers home, and updates on this blog as the school year comes to an end.  Thanks for your cooperation!**

Cancer Awareness Relay

Mar 21st

During the week of March 12th,  Rosebank Elementary participated in Cancer Awareness Week with activities planned through the American Cancer Society. One of the activities was a Cancer Awareness Relay for Life. Classrooms took turns running laps on the track in 15 minutes intervals. When one class finished their run, it passed the “baton” – in this case, a banner – to the next class. Earlier in the week, students were encouraged to decorate paper bag luminaries which lined the border of the track. Participants who have dealt with, or are dealing with cancer, were also given a Cancer Awareness t-shirt to wear with pride. To see more photos from our relay, please visit our classroom Flickr page. This upcoming July 28th, the American Cancer Society will be hosting a larger Relay for Life at Chula Vista High School. For more information, click here.

Here’s what has happened in Room 16 this month…

6th Grade Camp – There is less than a month until all camp balances are due! Room 16 only has four students who have paid in full for camp!! If students do not turn in balances and medical health forms by March 23, then students will not be able to attend 6th Grade Camp, and will remain at Rosebank during that week. Some students may need to have a physical by their doctor, so please plan accordingly for appointments in order to complete the medical health forms.

Perfect Attendance – Congratulations to the following students for maintaining perfect attendance for the months of December and January: Lynet, Ashley, Michael, Amarany, Reyna, Alyssa, Bianca, Alex L., Salma, Raul, Karla, Ariah, Maritza and Daniel.

An extra special congratulations to Raul for being the winner of January’s Bike Raffle! Because of his perfect attendance, his name was included in a drawing for a monthly raffle to win a brand new bike. His name was pulled from over 100 names.

Speech Contest - Congratulations to Ashley and Raul for making the top 3 of this year’s speech contest for 6th grade at Rosebank. The theme for 6th grade this year was “How Can I Impact My World?”  Ashley earned first place, and will compete at the district level on February 24th. Good luck, Ashley!! To hear both Ashley’s and Raul’s speeches, you can click here: Ashley‘s -  Raul‘s.

Non-Fiction Research Reports – Students are now actively working on their non-fiction research projects in class. They will need to have research books and web articles in class every day for the next several weeks in order to take notes and write summaries. If your child has not visited the library to collect books, this is their responsibility to be prepared in class.

Photo Gallery – Check out our latest photos from the Sweetwater Authority Field Trip, and science in the classroom at our Gallery page (see above).

Other Reminders…

Parent Conferences – March 15-23. These will be minimum days, and class will be dismissed at 1:45 each day.

Welcome back to school, and 2012! We hope you had a restful three weeks off. We are halfway through the year, and have lots ahead planned. Amid more upcoming holidays, we’re reminding you to keep up the momentum that you built before the break. Things to look forward to in the coming weeks:

AR points for January – Congratulations to those of you who went up a reading color! Now that you have improved, you may see that your point goals have increased based upon you latest STAR test. AR point goals will remain as the three-week goals, and due January 31st. Please login to your AR account to see what your point goal is for January. We expect you to have at least one book report done upon return to school, so you get a head start on points!

Non-fiction Book Report projects – We will be starting reports for non-fiction topics soon. If you have not chosen a topic that interests you, please come up with one soon. It should be something that you will enjoy and not be bored to write about. We have a list of topics already chosen, so reports cannot be duplicated.

NO SCHOOL – Monday, Jan. 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Sweetwater Authority Science Unit – Feb 8th we will have an classroom presentation by a member of the Sweetwater Authority. This is an agency that provides YOUR water in Chula Vista. They also monitor its treatment to make sure it is safe for us to use. Then on Feb. 9th, we will be taking a field trip to visit the treatment plant. Attendance on the field trip is based upon behavior and work completion.
Camp Marston payments – Reminders and camp balances went home with report cards in December. Camp will be fast approaching. Be sure to talk to your families about raising money to go in the Spring.

Late Congratulations!

Winter Break is right around the corner for Rosebank Elementary. For many families, it is a time to look forward to Christmas shopping, visits with relatives, or making sweet treats. Some others may not celebrate Christmas, but another holiday or tradition such as Las Posadas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. Either way, it most often is a special time to remember.

What is a special holiday memory you have as a child? Write a brief paragraph telling which holiday your family celebrated, and something memorable about what happened that year. BE SURE TO CHECK FOR CAPITALS AND SPELLING BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR BLOG POST!
